FSS & Miscellaneous Class breeds: where to show them

Every AKC Foundation Stock Service and Miscellaneous Class breed in one place — verified against AKC’s current lists (October 2026) — with plain answers to the question every rare-breed owner asks: where can I actually show my dog?

Short answer: The AKC’s Foundation Stock Service (FSS) is the program for rare breeds working toward full recognition — they compete in FSS Open Shows, 4–6 Month Beginner Puppy, and performance events. The Miscellaneous Class is the last step before full recognition: those breeds can also enter the Miscellaneous Class at all-breed shows, but only where the host club offers it — and that varies show to show.

Recently graduated: now fully AKC-recognized

Three breeds earned full AKC recognition on January 1, 2026, and moved out of the Miscellaneous Class into regular competition:

  • Basset Fauve de Bretagne — Hound Group
  • Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka — Toy Group
  • Teddy Roosevelt Terrier — Terrier Group

Miscellaneous Class — 13 breeds

One step from full recognition. Click any breed for where it can compete and what classes it can enter.

How ThePetAdvisor helps rare-breed owners

Our weekend show guides increasingly note which shows offer FSS and Miscellaneous Class judging — because “does this show offer my breed’s class?” is currently buried in premium lists. Browse upcoming show weekends, and always confirm class offerings in the official premium list before entering.
