What is the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show?

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is America’s most famous dog show — and its second-oldest continuous sporting event, behind only the Kentucky Derby. The club’s first show, the “First Annual New York Bench Show of Dogs,” was held in 1877 with about 1,200 dogs; the club took its name from the Westminster Hotel in Manhattan, where its founders met to talk dogs.

The 151st edition runs January 30 through February 2, 2027. Daytime breed judging and agility events are at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center; evening Group judging and Best in Show are at Madison Square Garden. And 2027 opens a new era: after a decade on Fox Sports and more than thirty years on USA/CNBC before that, Westminster streams live on Netflix.

The four days, day by day

Who’s judging?

Mr. Espen Engh of Norway judges Best in Show on Tuesday night — a third-generation Greyhound fancier and one of the few active judges invited to award BIS at both Westminster and Crufts. Announced group judges: Mr. Ken Murray (Hound), Mr. Clay Coady (Terrier), and Ms. Patricia Sosa (Non-Sporting). The Sporting, Working, Toy, and Herding group judges haven’t been announced yet.

Can you still enter?

The 2027 premium hasn’t been published yet, so the closing date and entry fees are still pending. Westminster is an invitation-based championship show — most entries come from qualified champions — with entries handled by superintendent MB-F, Inc. The exact 2027 entry rules will be in the premium list when it publishes.

See the full show page for the schedule, the judges, tickets, and entry details as they’re announced.

Watch on Netflix

In May 2026 the Westminster Kennel Club announced a multi-year deal making Netflix the live home of the show beginning with the 151st edition. Best in Breed competitions stream live on Netflix’s Tudum platform; the Masters Agility Championship airs as a taped broadcast. It ends a decade on Fox Sports (2017–2026) and, before that, 1984–2016 on USA Network and CNBC.

Attending in person

Tickets are on sale now through the club’s official site — and read carefully before buying: the 2027 show uses two separate ticketing platforms. Javits Center tickets do not grant access to Madison Square Garden, and vice versa. Saturday’s daytime ticket doesn’t include the Saturday evening Masters Agility Finals (sold separately; currently sold out). MSG offers 2-day passes for the Monday and Tuesday evening events.

The Javits Center is at 655 W 34th St; Madison Square Garden is at 4 Pennsylvania Plaza, above Penn Station. The nearest airports are LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark.

Last year, for reference

The 150th show (January 31–February 3, 2026) was won by Penny, a Doberman Pinscher handled by Andy Linton — his second Westminster BIS, 37 years after his first. Reserve Best in Show was Cota, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, under BIS judge David Fitzpatrick. About 2,500 dogs representing 212 breeds competed, and the show aired on FOX, FS1, and FS2.

Why go

It’s the Super Bowl of dog shows — and the 151st lands at a hinge moment, with the Netflix era beginning and a new generation of dogs following Penny’s milestone win. The daytime breed judging at the Javits is the connoisseur’s day; Tuesday night at the Garden, with Best in Show crowned live, is the bucket-list night.
