Dock Diving: The Complete Beginner's Guide

Dogs sprint down a dock and launch themselves into a pool, and a crowd loses its mind. Dock diving is pure, uncomplicated fun — here’s how the titles work and what your first splash looks like.

Know this first: dock diving titles come from NADD (North America Diving Dogs), not the AKC. The AKC recognizes them through its Title Recognition Program, so they still appear on your dog’s AKC record — but you earn them at NADD events under NADD rules.

What dock diving actually is

Your dog sprints down a long dock and jumps into a pool chasing a toy you throw. Distance is measured where the base of the tail breaks the water. The longest jump wins.

Each turn is called a splash: your dog gets two jumps, and the longer of the two counts as the one qualifying jump for that splash.

The title ladder: distance jumping

Titles are earned per division — five qualifying jumps within a distance band earns that division’s title:

Distance divisions and titles

5 jumpsDN (Novice)
5 jumpsDJ (Junior)
5 jumpsDS (Senior)
5 jumpsDM (Master)

Novice: 1 inch to 9’11″ · Junior: 10′ to 14’11″ · Senior: 15′ to 19’11″ · Master: 20′ to 23’11″

DE (Dock Elite) — 5 qualifying jumps of 24 feet or more.

Keep jumping and the titles stack up: Advanced (e.g. DNA) at 30 total jumps in the division, Excellent (e.g. DNX) at 55, and each further number adds 25 more.

More ways to splash

Same idea as distance jumping: five qualifying performances per division, then Advanced and Excellent levels.

Your first event: what to expect

Try a practice jump first. Most events sell practice splashes. Some dogs launch on the first try; some need to learn the dock isn’t scary. Find out cheaply.

Bring towels. Many towels. And a crate, water, and a favorite floating toy — though the toy you throw usually has to meet event rules, so ask.

It’s loud and it’s fine. Music, cheering, splashing — dock diving is a party. If your dog is sound-sensitive, watch a few splashes from a distance first.

Frequently asked questions

Are dock diving titles AKC titles?

No. They are NADD (North America Diving Dogs) titles, which the AKC recognizes through its Title Recognition Program — so they appear on your dog’s AKC record.

How many jumps does it take to earn Dock Novice (DN)?

Five qualifying jumps within the Novice division (1 inch to 9 feet 11 inches).

What is a splash?

One turn on the dock: your dog gets two jumps, and the longer of the two counts as the qualifying jump.

What if my dog jumps different distances at different events?

Jumps count toward the division matching their distance, and titles are earned per division — so a varied jumper collects titles across divisions.

What comes after the five division titles?

Advanced titles at 30 total qualifying jumps in a division (e.g. DNA), Excellent at 55 (e.g. DNX), and each further level adds 25 more jumps.

Can any breed try dock diving?

Yes — any dog that can swim and wants to jump. It’s one of the most beginner-friendly dog sports there is.
