At a glance

What is the Mid-Jersey regional specialty?

The Mid-Jersey Labrador Retriever Club, established in 1972, is one of the oldest AKC Labrador clubs in New Jersey. Its fall specialty weekend is a fixture for Lab people in the Mid-Atlantic: two complete specialty shows, back to back, so a dog can finish a week of showing with two cracks at majors.

Think of it as a two-day Lab festival. Unlike an all-breed show where the Labradors get judged and everybody goes home, everything here is Labradors — black, chocolate, and yellow, puppies to veterans, both days. The club puts on a show that feels like a gathering: complimentary breakfast and lunch both days, a raffle, RAVE rosettes, and Thursday's Halloween costume contest at the mid-day ring break.

This year's Thursday specialty is dedicated to the memory of Joan McInnis of Tulgeywood Labradors — a nod to the people, not just the dogs, who make the breed community.

Sweepstakes fees are paid back as prizes: after the club's expense reserve and Best in Sweepstakes pool, First gets 40%, Second 30%, Third 20%, and Fourth 10% of each class's fees.

Why go — even if you didn’t enter

You don't need a dog in the ring to get something out of this weekend. A back-to-back specialty is one of the best places to:

The shows are outdoors and unbenched, with show hours from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM each day — dress for October in the Lehigh Valley and bring a chair.
