What is the Giant Schnauzer National Specialty?
Every year, the Giant Schnauzer Club of America — the national parent club for the breed — hosts one big event just for Giant Schnauzers. It is called the National Specialty, and the 2026 edition packs four shows into one week: the national itself, the Western Regional, and Midwest Regional I, plus a breeder's sweepstakes.
Unlike an all-breed show, everything here is Giant Schnauzers — conformation (the traditional dog show), sweepstakes for the youngsters, Junior Showmanship, and the AKC National Owner-Handled Series at every show. If you love the breed, this is the one week you do not miss.

Each day has its own show, so you can plan your visit around what you most want to see.
Wednesday, October 14 — the breeder's sweepstakes. The week opens with the breeder's sweepstakes, judged by Mr. Steve Fox — young dogs judged by the people who bred them, a look at the breed's future.
Thursday, October 15 — the Western Regional. The Western Regional with regular and non-regular classes plus Junior Showmanship, judged by Ms. Sandy Weaver. The club also runs a judges seminar (classroom 12:30–2:00 PM, hands-on 2:00–3:00 PM), and the Giant Invitational Gala runs 6:30–9:00 PM at the Wildwood Hotel ballroom — tickets $50, judged by a three-person panel of a breeder, a handler, and an AKC judge.
Friday, October 16 — Midwest Regional I. Mr. William (Bill) P. Shelton judges the regular and non-regular classes and Junior Showmanship; Mrs. Dayl A. Phillip judges the sweepstakes and veteran sweepstakes.
Saturday, October 17 — the national. The main event: Miss Janine Starink (provisional) judges the national regular and non-regular classes; D. Lance Carter judges sweepstakes and veteran sweepstakes; Mrs. Dayl A. Phillip (provisional) judges Junior Showmanship. Stud Dog, Brood Bitch, and Brace are offered on Saturday only.

The show is indoors at Purina Farms with 8am–6pm show hours, and the host hotel — the Wildwood Hotel — is about 15 miles away in Wildwood, Missouri: two queen beds $99 a night Sunday–Thursday ($159 Friday–Saturday), kings $105/$165, with a $30 pet fee for 1–2 dogs ($60 for 3–4) and breakfast included. The Giant Invitational Gala on Thursday night is the week's social centerpiece.
