What is the English Setter National Specialty?

Every year, the English Setter Association of America — the AKC’s parent club for the breed — hosts the one show that matters most to English Setter people: its National Specialty. This year it’s November 2–6 at the Purina Farms Event Center in Gray Summit, Missouri — the first time the club has ever held its national at Purina, something the membership has asked for for years.

It’s a true working-breed week: alongside conformation there’s a hunt test and walking field trial, two English Setter–only agility trials, a scent work trial, obedience and rally, plus futurity and maturity, three sweepstakes, and the Top Twenty competition.

Friday, November 6: Junior Showmanship, Best of Breed and the award of the perpetual trophies, and brace.

Leading in: all-breed Fast CAT (October 31–November 1, hosted by another club) and ESAA-sponsored scent work on the Purina grounds. Following: the Kettle Moraine English Setter Club holds back-to-back specialties on the grounds Saturday, November 7.

Can I still enter?

No — entries closed October 7. All entries closed at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, with Superintendent Jim Rau Dog Shows, Ltd.

But you can still go. National specialties are open to spectators — and a first-ever national at Purina Farms, with the Top Twenty and the field events, is one English Setter fans won’t want to miss.

Why go?

If you love English Setters — or think you might want one — there is no better introduction than the national. You’ll see the breed’s full range in one week: show dogs in the ring, puppies in the futurity and sweepstakes, juniors handling, and — the best part for a bird-dog breed — English Setters doing the field work they were made for. The Top Twenty evening, the showcases, and the week at Purina make it as much a reunion as a show.
