Three breeds the world got from Mexico
Mexico has three native dog breeds recognized by its kennel club, the Federación Canófila Mexicana — and each one has a story that stretches back centuries.
The Xoloitzcuintli
Pronounced show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee — or just “Xolo.” The name comes from Nahuatl: Xolotl, the Aztec god, plus itzcuintli, dog. For more than 3,000 years, the Xolo was sacred to Mexico’s peoples, believed to guard souls and guide them through the underworld. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera kept them. Disney’s Coco made one — Dante — famous worldwide.
It comes in three sizes (Toy, Miniature, Standard) and two varieties (hairless and coated), and it is Mexico’s national dog. Its AKC story is a comeback tale: one of the first breeds ever recorded by the AKC in 1887, dropped from the studbook in 1959, then fought back through the Xoloitzcuintli Club of America to full recognition in the Non-Sporting Group in 2011. Westminster debut: 2012.
The Chihuahua
Descended from the Techichi, the small companion dog of the Toltec civilization, and named for the Mexican state where American travelers found them in the 1800s. The AKC recognized the breed in 1904 — the first registered Chihuahua was a dog named Midget, out of Texas. Two coat varieties, Smooth and Long, are shown separately.
Don’t let the size fool you. As you’ll see below, a Mexican-bred Chihuahua became the winningest of his breed in history — and the first ever to rank No. 1 in the AKC Toy Group.
The Calupoh
Mexico’s third breed is its youngest: developed in the 1990s in a cultural-heritage project to recreate the ancient Mexican wolfdogs whose remains were found at the Pyramid of the Moon and the Templo Mayor. The FCM recognized the Calupoh in 1999. It is not recognized by the FCI or the AKC — so you won’t see one in the AKC-licensed rings in November, though it may appear in FCM Special Attraction programming.
The star of right now: Calaco
If one dog carries Mexico’s flag into 2026, it’s a Standard Xoloitzcuintle named Calaco (Master Rock Calaco), owned by Silvia Tojo and Miguel Alonso of Mexico. In August 2025, at the FCI World Dog Show in Helsinki — nearly 24,000 entries — Calaco won his group and went on to take Reserve Best in Show under judge Harri Lehkonen. An unprecedented feat for the breed on the world stage.
The momentum hasn’t stopped. At the 2026 World Dog Show in Bologna, the FCM-led Mexican delegation paraded Xolos in all three sizes and both varieties — a celebration the press dubbed the great Xolo party. Watch for Mexican Xolos in Mexico City this November.
The all-time legend: Sonnito
The greatest Chihuahua in show history was Mexican-bred. Multi-BIS/Multi-BISS MEX/AM GCH Sonnus Filho (Sanchez) — “Sonnito” — was bred by Romulo Sanchez, owned by J & J Moses and R. Sanchez-Torres, and handled in the U.S. by Erika Lanasa.
Sonnito by the numbers
48 all-breed Bests in Show — the most by any Chihuahua, ever. 93 Group Firsts in 2014 alone. Ranked No. 1 in the AKC Toy Group for 2014 — the first Chihuahua in history to do it. Winner of the 2014 Toy Group Winkie Award. Best in Show at the Progressive Dog Club in February 2016, Best of Breed at Westminster 2016 — then retired from U.S. competition to be campaigned in Mexico.
More Mexican greats
Georgio Armani, a Xoloitzcuintli, was the first of his breed to win Best in Show at an AKC event — a milestone reported by the Associated Press in 2012, the year after the breed joined the Non-Sporting Group.
Zoe, a Standard Xolo owned by Graciela Mendez Galvan of Mexico, won her group at the FCI World Dog Show in Milan in 2015 and went on to the Best in Show finals.
And Mexico judges on the world stage too: Gerardo Bernard of Mexico City has judged at Westminster, and Manuel Queijeiro of Mexico judged Xoloitzcuintles at the 2025 World Dog Show in Helsinki.
The FCM: the engine behind it all
The Federación Canófila Mexicana is the FCI’s member organization for Mexico — and it is no small operation. In 2024 it registered nearly 57,000 puppies, held 110 all-breed championship shows, and counted more than 14,600 members across 35 clubs.
FCM president Dr. José Luis Payró put it this way when the AKC partnership was announced: “Mexico is the homeland of the Xoloitzcuintle, Chihuahua, and Calupoh — breeds that represent our nation and its deep canine heritage.” AKC president and CEO Gina DiNardo called the Mexico City shows “a significant milestone” in the relationship between the two organizations.
November 2026 — and the road to 2028
The FCM Universal Championship runs November 12–15 at Expo Santa Fe in Mexico City — four days of AKC-licensed all-breed shows, the first ever in Mexico. The AKC event listing is approved, Onofrio Dog Shows is superintending, and Michael Canalizo is slated for Best in Show. (U.S. exhibitors take note: since August 2026, Mexico requires New World Screwworm inspection documents for dogs entering the country.)
But November is only the beginning. At the 2026 World Dog Show’s closing ceremony, the FCI flag was passed to Mexico City: the FCI-FCM World Dog Show 2028 comes to Centro Citibanamex, November 2–5, 2028 — deliberately timed to Día de Muertos, with the Xoloitzcuintle as the event’s ambassador. The 2026 shows are the rehearsal. 2028 is the world stage.
Why Mexico’s dogs hit different
In Mexico, the dog-show world runs on two tracks at once: FCI and AKC. Mexican exhibitors campaign in both systems as a matter of course — Sonnito’s MEX/AM titles tell that story — and November’s shows will run AKC-licensed and FCM rings side by side each day. It’s a bilingual sport in a bilingual country, which is exactly why this story is told in two languages.
And then there’s the Xolo’s oldest job. For three thousand years, Mexicans have believed the Xolo guides souls through the underworld — which is why giant Xolo statues line Reforma Avenue for Day of the Dead, why pet ofrendas are now tradition, and why the 2028 World Dog Show chose the breed as its ambassador. No other breed on earth carries that kind of meaning.
