What is the DACA National Specialty?
Every AKC breed has a parent club — the official organization for that breed in America. For the Dogo Argentino, it's the Dogo Argentino Club of America. Each year the parent club holds its national specialty: a breed-only show where the finest Dogos in the country compete for the top titles of the year.
Think of it as the breed's championship weekend. Unlike an all-breed show where the Dogos share the spotlight with 200 other breeds, everything here is Dogo Argentino — the dogs, the judges, the conversations, the shopping. And this year's format gives you three chances at the ring: Friday holds two regional specialties — the Dogo Argentino Club of South Texas and the Central Florida Dogo Argentino Club — as a warm-up, then Saturday is the national itself.
The Dogo Argentino is a Working Group breed developed in Argentina as a big-game hunting dog: large, white, powerfully built, and unmistakable. At a national specialty, you see the breed at its very best — three shows, two days, one breed.
The weekend, day by day
The three shows are held under one roof, back to back. Each day is its own separate show — you enter each one individually.
| Day | What’s on |
|---|---|
| Fri, Oct 16 | Central Florida Dogo Argentino Club regional specialty — 64 entries; Junior Showmanship (Tina Starr, 10:00 AM), puppy sweepstakes (Kassi McLaughlin, 10:10 AM), regular judging (Ms. Kristin Winter, 10:45 AM) |
| Fri, Oct 16 | Dogo Argentino Club of South Texas regional specialty — 81 entries; Junior Showmanship (Ms. Anneka M. Dahle, 12:30 PM), puppy sweepstakes (Mr. Uriel Velazquez, 12:45 PM), regular judging (Mr. Victor E. Nardelli, 1:15 PM) |
| Sat, Oct 17 | DACA National Specialty — 107 entries; Junior Showmanship (Barbara Shaw, 9:00 AM), puppy sweepstakes (Mr. Edgardo Martinez, 9:10 AM), regular judging (Mr. Marcos De Wiltberg, 9:45 AM), plus 4–6 Month Beginner Puppy, veterans, stud dog, brood bitch, Best Field, and Best Head |
A few things worth knowing as a newcomer:
- Sweepstakes are a special puppy competition — young Dogos judged against their own age group. A preview of the breed's next generation.
- Junior Showmanship is for kids and teens — $10 as a standalone entry, free when entered with a regular class.
- Best Head and Best Field are Dogo specialty competitions: Best Head judges the breed's hallmark head type (33 entered Saturday; 28 entered Friday in South Texas), and Best Field honors working ability (Saturday, DACA national only).
- The AKC National Owner-Handled Series is offered at all three shows — a separate competition for dogs handled by their owners, no professional handlers.
- At the national, a three-point major is awarded to Reserve Winners Dog and Reserve Winners Bitch — championship points for the runner-up.
Who’s judging the national
The national specialty judging panel is the headline assignment. For Saturday, October 17:
- Breed (conformation) and 4–6 Month Beginner Puppy: Mr. Marcos De Wiltberg
- Puppy sweepstakes: Mr. Edgardo Martinez
- Junior Showmanship: Barbara Shaw
Friday's regional panels: South Texas — Mr. Victor E. Nardelli (breed), Mr. Uriel Velazquez (sweepstakes), Ms. Anneka M. Dahle (juniors). Central Florida — Ms. Kristin Winter (breed), Kassi McLaughlin (sweepstakes), Tina Starr (juniors).
Entries are closed — here’s what it cost

- First entry of a dog: $34
- Additional entry of the same dog: $20
- Sweepstakes (must also be entered in a regular class): $20
- Stud dog, brood bitch, veterans: $30
- Junior Showmanship: $10 as the only entry — free as an additional class
- Best Head, Best Movement, Best Field (as an additional entry): $10
- 4–6 Month Beginner Puppy: $25
Sweepstakes payouts give 40% to First, 30% to Second, 20% to Third, and 10% to Fourth in each class after the club's 35% expense retention.
Why go — even if you didn’t enter
You don't need a dog in the ring to get something out of this weekend. A national specialty is the single best place to:
- See the breed's best. The top Dogo Argentinos in the country, in one building, across two days. No video does this justice.
- Meet breeders. If you're looking for your next Dogo, there is no better place to watch temperaments, ask questions, and see whole families of dogs from the same kennel.
- Learn the breed. Watching sweepstakes, juniors, and the breed judging back to back is a crash course in what makes a great Dogo Argentino — and the Best Head competition teaches you the breed's hallmark type.
- Watch the kids. Junior Showmanship at a national is special — these are the future handlers of the breed.
Everything is indoors, unbenched, with show hours from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Central each day — so you can come and go on your own schedule.
Planning your visit
