What is the Bloodhound National Specialty?
Every year, the American Bloodhound Club — the AKC’s parent club for the breed — hosts the one show that matters most to Bloodhound people: its National Specialty. It’s the biggest all-Bloodhound gathering of the year, where breeders, owners, handlers, and fans from across the country meet in one place. Bloodhounds compete in the regular show classes — dogs, bitches, veterans, and the working dogs bred to do the jobs the breed was created for — all the way up to Best of Breed on Friday.
This year the national is paired with the South Central Bloodhound Trailblazer Regional Specialty on Saturday, so exhibitors get two specialties back to back. And the week leading in is packed: a two-day national mantrailing event and four all-breed scent work trials — the activities this breed was born to do.

Who’s judging?
The judging panel was revised September 22, 2026. National specialty conformation — the regular and non-regular classes on Friday, October 23 — is judged by Karen Dewey, including Junior Showmanship, veteran and working classes, and Best of Breed. Sweepstakes (puppy, junior, and veteran) are judged by Israel Garcia; futurity stakes by Jennifer Hallett; and all obedience and rally classes by Cathleen Caballero. Saturday’s regional specialty conformation goes to Richard E. Nance, with regional sweepstakes judged by Donna Bennett.
What happens each day?
Wednesday, October 21: National futurity; obedience and rally for all breeds and all-American dogs; a luncheon with a bloat/first-aid workshop; 4–6 Month Puppy Match; CGC and trick dog evaluations; the Top 10 Invitational and dinner buffet; and a welcome reception.
Thursday, October 22: Judges education; veteran and puppy sweepstakes; a luncheon with a scent work workshop; CGC and trick dog evaluations; OFA blood draws; and a BBQ cookout with an ice cream social in the evening.
Friday, October 23: The National Specialty — Junior Showmanship, veteran and working classes, dog and bitch classes, Best of Breed, and the non-regular multi-dog classes (stud dog, brood bitch, brace, team). Luncheon round-table discussions, then the ABC annual meeting, awards, and auction banquet.
Saturday, October 24: The South Central regional specialty — sweepstakes, Junior Showmanship, classes, and Best of Breed.
Leading into the week: four all-breed scent work trials on October 17–18 and a two-day national mantrailing event on October 19–20 (both with separate entry processes), plus the trailing awards dinner on Tuesday night.
Can I still enter?
No — entries closed September 30. All entries closed at 12:00 noon Eastern time on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, through Superintendent Executive Dog Shows, and no new entries can be accepted after the closing.
But you can still go. National specialties are open to spectators, and for a breed enthusiast this is the best place on earth to see dozens of Bloodhounds in one room, meet the breeders behind them, watch mantrailing and scent work, and shop the club boutique. If you missed this one, it’s a good reason to put next year’s national on your calendar early.
Why go?
If you love Bloodhounds — or think you might want one — there is no better introduction than the national. You’ll see the breed’s full range in one weekend: show dogs in the ring, puppies in futurity and sweepstakes, juniors handling, obedience and rally teams, and — the best part — Bloodhounds doing trailing and scent work, the job the breed was made for. The luncheons, workshops, and evening banquets make it as much a reunion as a show. And because everything is at the host hotel, you never have to leave.
