What is the Afghan Hound National Specialty?
Every year, the Afghan Hound Club of America — the national parent club for the breed — hosts one big event just for Afghan Hounds. It is called the National Specialty, and the 2026 edition is the 89th one. Think of it as the breed’s Super Bowl: the largest gathering of Afghan Hounds in the country, where the year’s top dogs compete for Best of Breed and the title of the national specialty winner.
Unlike an all-breed show, everything here is Afghan Hounds — conformation (the traditional dog show), plus the sports Afghans were born to do: lure coursing and racing, along with agility, obedience, and rally. If you love the breed, this is the one event you do not miss.

Day by day
The four days each have their own focus, so you can plan your visit around what you most want to see.
Tuesday, October 20 — the running dogs’ day. Agility, lure coursing, and LGRA racing (straight-line sprint racing for sighthounds). This is where you see Afghans do what they were bred for — run.
Wednesday, October 21 — more speed. Agility and lure coursing continue.
Thursday, October 22 — the thinking dogs’ day. Obedience, rally, sweepstakes (a special competition for young dogs), and the triathlon — a combined award for dogs that compete across conformation, performance, and coursing.
Friday, October 23 — the main event. The national conformation judging, where Best of Breed is awarded, plus Junior Showmanship (young handlers showing the dogs) and the parades — a celebration of the breed’s champions and veterans.
After the national wraps up, the weekend keeps going: regional Afghan Hound specialties hosted by the Finger Lakes and Midwest clubs are held on Saturday, October 24 at the same venue.
Who’s judging?
Michael Canalizo judges the conformation classes, including Best of Breed, and Junior Showmanship. Laura Mauldin judges sweepstakes and the triathlon. Patricia Strong judges obedience and rally. David Mancino judges agility. Lure coursing is judged by Anne Midgarden and Jan Swayze-Curry.
Can you still enter?
No — entries are closed. The entry deadline was October 7, 2026 at 12pm EST, and that has passed. If you have questions about the show, the show secretary is MAC Dog Shows LLC / Mary Mignogna at [email protected].
If you are already entered, spectating is still wide open — and if you are thinking about next year, put the national on your calendar early so you don’t miss the closing date.
Why go?
Because this is the most Afghan Hounds you will ever see in one place. For spectators, it is a rare chance to meet breeders, watch the country’s top dogs up close, and learn about the breed from the people who know it best. For exhibitors, it is the biggest stage in the breed — and with obedience, rally, agility, coursing, and racing all on the schedule, there is a ring for every kind of Afghan.
The show is indoors at the Roberts Centre with 8am–6pm show hours, and the host hotel — the Holiday Inn Roberts Centre — is right at the venue: $159 a night with booking code H3A and a $25 pet fee. The running events (LGRA racing, lure coursing, Fast CAT) take place outdoors.
